New Volkswagen Golf: New VW Golf VI Gets An Early Internet Unveil

Images on Sunday leaked onto the Web depicting the 2009 Volkswagen Golf VI ahead of its official debut, but VW has now officially revealed the sixth-generation of its popular hatchback. Although sales are expected to start later this year in Europe, Americans will have to wait until late 2009 for the Golf VI to be imported as the next-gen Rabbit.

The overall styling of the new Golf is classic VW, but also takes styling cues from the new Scirocco and Passat CC — the latter of which the new Golf also borrows some interior bits from.

European motivation for the Golf will be provided by a range of four gas engines and two diesels, with power ranging from 110 horsepower to 160. The gas engines will use VW’s TSI technology, which means they will feature both turbo and supercharging. No word on what powerplants will make the trek across the pond.

A DSG automatic transmission — with either six or seven forwards speeds — will be standard on all Golf models, save for the base car.

Other new features include an optional radar-based cruise control system, adaptive suspension, and VW’s Park Assist system, which partially automates parking.
